Filmmakers are a funny lot. For whatever reason we can’t call a clothespin a clothespin. In the film world it’s called a C-47 clamp. Extension cords are called stingers. The list goes on and on. We have Gary Coleman stands, Blondes, Tweenies, Half Apples you name it and there’s a term unique to filmmaking for it.
One of the terms that seems to gets everyone’s attention right away is “Instant Sex.” Instant Sex is a post production technique that produces a soft, warm, filmy feel in photos or footage. Everything appears to have a gentle aura. It’s a way to take average footage and make it more interesting.
It’s not a complicated technique. It involves blurs, composite modes and opacity. I actually like creating a look that reverses the standard way of creating the effect.
Below is just some test footage playing around with the effect.
Some observations:
This was footage from a new uncleaned routine. What does uncleaned mean? Well, it’s still rough and not totally polished. So you’ll have to catch one of their performances when they’ve had a chance to perfect this one.
At least two Spirits texted Tiffany and said ” Did you see Kevin’s latest post!?!?” before they really read what Instant Sex meant. 
Tiffany will drop everything and watch the video unless Two and a half men is on.
Tiffany will then email me and say” I love it!” Course, she may say she hates it but so far she hasn’t really disliked anything I’ve done. Let’s hope this doesn’t break my winning streak.
The post will be viewed more times than any other post on this blog.
Most people who view the video will ask “How come it’s so blurry?” It’s supposed to look high key and dreamy soft focus.
Marie will get teased by her friends for being the “face” of this particular post.
Tina will still think I’m an idiot.
Idiot is actually the kindest word I could put in this post.
This is the last of the old style of shooting. 2010 is going to bring a lot of changes in and out of the studio.
I’ll actually talk in the studio now.
The team will realize that I really have nothing intelligent to say and wish I would just shut up.
2010 will be a banner year for the Spirits so stay tuned!
