The 2009 Cedar Rapids Fire and Ice Parade had some extra Christmas Spirit this year as the CR Spirits danced in what was most certainly their last performance of 2009. Although the temperatures were down into the twenties, it didn’t dampen the Spirits excitement to perform.
HD cameras need a lot of light in order to get a great image. Unfortunately, the Fire and Ice Parade took place well after the sun had slipped beneath the horizon. There are certain “rules” that most cinematographers follow in order to get good footage. If I had followed them, I wouldn’t have been able to shoot anything worth using. I was able to push my camera beyond its normal capabilities and came away with some decent footage. There’s no way I should have been able to shoot steady, sharp footage at 1/24th of a second handheld but obviously when you’re working with the Spirits, Christmas miracles do happen.
